Taylor Surname

We have no proof of this family prior to them living in New York in the late 1700's. Family legend indicates that the family came from Scotland some time before this date. Other less reputable family stories indicate that our line descends from a prominent Virginian Taylor family of English origin.

1st Generation:

George Taylor was born circa 1760's, possibly in Scotland. He died circa 1801 4.

According to family history, he was born in Scotland, but came to the United States as a young man, later being joined by an uncle, who was a lawyer. [Some sources have indicated that he was the same as George Conway Taylor, born in 1769 to George Taylor and Sarah Taliaferro Conway. This is a false claim, based on no evidence.] According to family tradition, George was a small store owner before his immigration to America. After arrival, he settled in New York state, where he was probably married in about 1790 to a Miss Susannah Gold (or Gould). The couple settled in Ovid Township, Seneca County, New York. They had several children, but only the names of 2 are known: James (see next generation) and Mary. George was of Presbyterian religious affiliation and apparently had "sandy" colored hair.

Considering his history as a store owner, George was said to have not been suited to farming and clearing land. He had heard stories that at the time (late 1700's), the area of Cincinnati, Ohio, was "the land of opportunity." In 1796, George abandoned or sold his farm in New York and with his family, moved out west, settling in what is now Cincinnati, Ohio. George was said to have been moderately successful in a trading business on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers between Cincinnati and New Orleans. In 1801, George left his family to go back east on a trip to retrieve some of his horses and stock that he had left behind. He never returned to his family in Ohio and left no indication of where he had gone. His widow eventually left Ohio to try to find her husband, eventually hearing word that he had drowned on his way to New York.

George married Susannah Gold circa 1790. She was born on November 27, 1777 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. She died on August 27, 1845 in Boone Co., Indiana. She is buried in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery, Washington Twp., Boone Co., Indiana.
According to family history, when Susannah's husband never returned from his trip back east, she left her older children in Cincinnati and with the younger ones went to New York to look for her husband. After finding word that her husband had died, she then went to New York to try to regain their land and found that it had been taken from them. The story then indicates that she gave up her children for adoption and then moved to Pennsylvania to live with relatives, where she died.

In actuality, it appears that Susannah remarried not long after going back to New York. She married John Roberts sometime before 1804, when their first child was born. They had a family of 7 children before moving to Boone Co., Indiana.

They had at least two children:
1 James Lowden Taylor
2 Mary Taylor was born circa 1797 in New York. She married George Fall on August 21, 1813 in Franklin Co., Indiana.

2nd Generation:

James Lowden Taylor was born on October 30, 1794 in Ovid Township, Seneca County, New York 4. He died on December 4, 1875 in Jefferson Twp., Boone Co., Indiana 4. He is buried in the Taylor Cemetery, Jefferson Twp., Boone Co., Indiana.

Father: George Taylor
Mother: Susannah Gold

When James was not quite 2 years old, in 1796, he moved with his family out west, and they settled on the Ohio River, in what would eventually become Cincinnati, Ohio, but was then a frontier wilderness. Young James lived in this environment for several years, in relative peace until about 1801, when his father went on a trip back east to New York and drowned on the way. Apparently, back in Ohio, James' mother Susannah never learned the true fate of her husband and had no idea what had happened to him. Apparently, she waited 2 years for his arrival until she decided to go search for him herself as she could not afford to raise her children there in Ohio. It is said that she took some of her older children with her back east and left the younger ones (including James) behind in Cincinnati. James is said to have never seen his mother again. It is said that Susannah found word that her husband had drowned and then returned to New York to try to gain control of the land that they had owned there, but it had been taken away from her. Then apparently she went to Pennsylvania, where some of her family was, and died soon after. Word was sent back to Ohio that Susannah Taylor had died and the Taylor children were adopted out. (There is also some records that seem to indicate that instead of dying, Mrs. Susannah Taylor remarried to a Mr. Roberts and later moved to Boone County, Indiana, where she died in 1865.)

It seems that James and his sister Mary were adopted by a German hatter who soon after moved to Wayne County, Indiana, in a part that would eventually become Union County. Here, James learned the hatter trade and availed himself to the best of his ability. James was married on June 17, 1813 to Esther Fall, of German descent. They settled down on a 120 acre farm in what is now Union County, Indiana, just north of the town of Brownsville. He was a farmer but also apparently taught school during the winter. James and Esther had 12 children: George, William (see next generation), James, Sarah, Mary, Nancy, Julia, Oliver, Eliza, Charles, John and Martha. In 1835, James and his family sold their farm and moved to Boone County, Indiana, where they purchased a farm in Jefferson Township, south of the town of Thorntown. Here, James lived for the remainder of his life, and became quite successful in old age. He was of Presbyterian religious affiliation. His wife Esther died in 1866, and the following year, on September 9, 1867, he was married to a Naoma Sparks Immell. James died on December 4, 1875 at his farm in Jefferson Township, Boone County, Indiana. He was buried in the Taylor Cemetery, near Hazelrigg, Indiana.

Later, in 1835, their parents and the rest of their family joined them there. William was married on November 15, 1838, to Elizabeth Beck, either in Boone or Union County, Indiana. They settled down on their large farm in Jefferson Township and had 7 children: John, James (see next generation), William, Abner, Francis, Mary and Martha.

According to the 1878 Boone County Atlas Map, William owned 6 different tracts of land totaling 557.63 acres in Jefferson Township. This land was in Sections 13, 19, and 21; all in the northeast part of the township, between one half a mile and two miles west of Hazelrigg Station and off of Wolf Creek. The map also identifies 6 structures on his land, one of them being his residence. This brick home (said to have been built in 1844) was apparently still standing as late as the 1950's. That place is today on W Hazelrigg Road (County Road 300 N). Going west from Hazelrigg about 1.25 miles, it is on the left side of the road directly before the road veers to the right at the site of a pond. According to aerial photographs of this site, there are two houses at this site, one of them may be ours.

William was a very successful farmer and became quite wealthy in his time. He was a Democrat in politics (usually associated with the south and slavery) up until the Civil War, after which he became an Independent and supported the Union side during the war. He and his wife were Presbyterians. William's wife Elizabeth died in 1865, and in 1875, was remarried to Eliza Caldwell. She was afterwards buried in the Cox Cemetery, near Dover, Indiana.

Elizabeth married John William Custer on April 26, 1882 in Boone Co., Indiana 1,5.
